
As a white woman, I can easily walk into any lingerie shop and choose from an extensive selection of bras in my skin tone. From barely there lace to full coverage, the biggest problem that plagues me is which little number I should throw into my basket.
But if you happen to be a woman of color, heading to the department store to pick up a bra in “nude” isn’t exactly an easy feat. Brown bras continue to be blaringly absent in a sea of peach and olive hues.
And that’s where the “What’s Your Nude” campaign steps in. Recently launched on Facebook, the movement has garnered support from more than 3,000 users. Celebrities like Holly Robinson Peete, Chrisette Michelle, and the Food Network’s Sunny Anderson have also backed the cause on their social networking pages.

Yet in the face of the widespread support, protests continue to fall on deaf ears.
“Despite the overwhelming social media activity…not one decision maker at a bra manufacturer or bra retailer has reached out to campaign participants,” Tara Raines, the woman behind the campaign, stated in a press release. “Based on feedback from campaign participants, they all received canned, lukewarm replies from customer service representatives…We expected more, and deserve better. This is not something that we’re prepared to just let retailers and lingerie brands brush under the rug.”
To take action, you can join the nationwide Brown Bra Scavenger Hunt from now through February 10, 2012.
“We’re asking women to go to major retailers in their area and take photos or videos of brown bras or the lack thereof,” Raines said. “We then want them to post the images on our Facebook page or on Twitter with the #whatsyournude hashtag.”
