Yet another thing that there’s an app for: The need for a girlfriend when you don’t actually have one. Not because you want to be in a relationship or anything. Just because you want to look not lame when you’re out with friends.
Wait, what?
It’s true: Oh-so-creatively called Fake Girlfriend, this new texting service will give you the appearance of having a loving girlfriend who just can’t get enough of you, even when you’re not by her side. Or rather, ESPECIALLY when you’re not by her side. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Save the Fake Girlfriend phone number in your address book under whatever name you wish your fictional better half to be called.
Step 2: When you’re out with friends, send a text to that number.
Step 3: Wait patiently. The number will then respond with a girlfriend-esque text.
Step 4: Share the text with your friends. Gloat. Look not lame.

Or at least, that’s how it’s supposed to work. I can’t really vouch for the “not looking lame” part, because to be honest, nothing sounds more lame than having a robot pretend to be your girlfriend just so no one will think you’re single. Apparently your fake girlfriend will even call you and leave you voicemail if you want her to, but again, LAME. It’s really only one step up from having a sex bot, and if Buffy the Vampire Slayer taught us nothing else, it’s that sex bots are a bad idea.
FakeGirlfriend.co founder Ricky Robinett told the Huffington Post this week, "Right now the service is free. I'm looking into expanding some options that monetize the service, but nothing is in place for that yet." So I ask you this: Would you PAY for a service like this? In some ways, I can kind of understand the novelty of the service right now, since it’s free; with the right frame of mind, it can be seen more as a funny oddity than a symptom of an incredibly sad world. But somehow, I can’t help but think that actually paying for something like this would make it even sadder than it already is. I mean, what the hell is wrong with being single in the first place?
Tell us: Is Fake Girlfriend a silly idea or a genius idea?
