Valentine's Day. Love it or hate it, it comes every year. If you’re without a significant other this February, you can choose to let the day suck … or you can choose to make it rock. Ellie Scarborough, the former NBC reporter who started pinkkisses.com in 2010 to give women an online community to help them bounce back after a breakup, shared with us her three ideas for warping the annual schmoopfest into something fun:
1. Indulge in being single.
Being a party of one has plenty of benefits. What better day than February 14 to indulge in every last one of them? Do each of the following things without apology:
-Make a playlist of the most obnoxiously delightful, super girly music you own, and enjoy every last note at top volume.
-Spend an hour taking a bubble bath, just because you can.
-Talk with a girlfriend for as long as you want.
-Chill out in your favorite pajamas all night.
-Splurge on a new fragrance, your favorite chocolates, or a delectable spa treatment.
-Buy your own flowers.
You’re in charge of your own happiness, so do whatever makes you smile, and do it exactly the way you wish.
2. Create a grand adventure.
Instead of sitting around feeling left out, or braving Valentine’s dinner out with a girlfriend, why not check something off your wish list? Whether it’s checking out the new coffee shop across town or going on a road trip across the country, starting a new book or doing a technology cleanse for the day, now is your chance. Who says you can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day as a single girl? Take the day to fall a bit more in love with yourself and your incredible little life.
3. Celebrate your freedom with friends.
You're probably not the only one of your friends going stag this time of year. This is actually a great time to be a support system for someone else who's having a rough go at being unattached, separated or newly divorced. Get together and create a night to remember that has nothing to do with the hype. Host a wig party, cook dinner together, go bowling, see a horror movie or dance the night away to cheesy ‘80s music. In short, take back the night, have a blast doing it, and help a pal out in the process.
Tell us: Are you single this Valentine's Day? How do you plan to celebrate?
