Sure, this week’s Saturday Night Live was hosted by Katy Perry. Sure, it featured Robyn as the musical guest. Sure, it drew the highest ratings the show has seen in five weeks. All of these things are true. But you know what’s also true? Alec Baldwin stopped by for a surprise appearance, and it was AMAZING.
Naturally, the unexpected sketch lampooned Alec’s American Airlines/Words With Friends debacle from earlier in the week. During the episode’s Weekend Update, an “American Airlines captain” named “Steve Rogers” who looked suspiciously like Jack Donaghy dropped by to issue an official apology to Alec. How did it go? Well… see for yourself:

As with most of SNL’s more controversial sketches, this one’s brilliance lies not only in the outrageous character played by Alec, but also in the commentary made by the sketch’s straight man, Seth Meyers. If Alec had used the sketch purely as a way to take a dig at American Airlines, it wouldn’t have worked; Alec would have just come across as a jerk. But what they did instead was to play it like that was what Alec was doing, while simultaneously acknowledging that not everyone would feel it was necessary. Of course, Alec was taking a little bit of a stab at American; but the way he and Seth played it, it came across more as something for the general public, a sort of “Hey, wasn’t this whole thing ridiculous? Weren’t both Alec AND the airline silly? Hahahahaha!” message, rather than an all-out attack on American. All in all, an excellent way to handle it.
Steve Rogers, by the way, is Marvel superhero Captain America’s real name. Just sayin’.
