Fashion’s wacky emperor Karl Lagerfeld may not like curvy women like Heidi Klum, but he does like tattoos — as long as they are short-lived and bear the infamous double-C.

Chanel’s latest spring “must-have” is a set of temporary tattoos – you know, like the ones that used to come in every pack of Zebra gum. For just $75, you can stamp chain-link necklaces, a swooping bird and, of course, the famous logo on your body.

But isn’t this a little…how do you say… gauche?

Well, yes and that’s exactly the point. When we think of Chanel, we think of pearls and classic tweed suits, not body ink. But as tattooed party girl Lily Allen’s latest campaign proves, ladies who lunch aren’t the only ones wearing Chanel these days. Adding the logo to your skin is actually the logical next step as the label toys with its own identity. It is the perfect marriage of stuffy, high-end fashion and rebel chic.

And yet… it’s $75. For temporary tattoos. We get the concept — so tongue-in-cheek, so ironic, very fun, very French — but we can’t help thinking: “Karl, are you for realz?!?” For $75, you could buy roughly 10 lunches 60 Diet Cokes (Karl doesn’t eat). Or, if you’re still looking to wear the ubiquitous logo, you could save that $75 – you’re already about 1/53^rd of the way to your very own Chanel guitar case! We say, if you must wear Chanel’s logo on your skin, pick up a pack of Pentel R.S.V.P pens (a personal favorite) and start doodling!
