Celebrities don’t just wake up looking as good as they do on the red carpet. OK, maybe Heidi Klum does, but even she has some secret tricks to look her absolute best.

As we all know, there’s a lot more that goes into looking fabulous than just picking out what to wear. We asked personal stylists and fashion experts for their tips on how to look absolutely flawless for any fancy event.

1. Glowing Skin
A dress that shows some skin requires a flattering tan to show it off, advises Sarah Sulzberger Perpich, a New York-based fashion stylist who has worked with designer Zac Posen. Perpich suggests getting a spray tan two days prior to your big event. Rushed for time? You can make it look like you just returned from a tropical vacation with a self-tanner like Jergens natural glow EXPRESS Body Moisturizer ($8.99, walgreens.com). In just one day you’ll get a subtle glow and within three days, you’ll have a glorious (and skin-healthy) tan. And it doesn’t make you look orange or streaky.

2. A Bright Smile
“With a healthy glow, nothing complements your skin more than a bright white smile,” says Perpich. Jennifer Fliess, co-founder of Rent the Runway, agrees. “A smile is the best accessory to every outfit.” To make yours as bright as possible, try a teeth-whitening kit like Crest Whitestrips Pro Effects ($29.99, drugstore.com) 10 days before your event.

3. Polished Nails
A mani/pedi is a great way to make you feel all dolled up for a special occasion. But sitting in a salon may require time that you don’t have. To get beautiful nails quickly, paint on one of the fast-drying colors from Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri nail color collection like Rapid Red ($5, sears.com) and in 60 seconds you’ve got beautiful dry nails.

4. An Invisible Bra
When stars like Beyonce and Lea Michele step onto the red carpet in deep V-neck and backless dresses, they opt for one of the ingenious designs from The Natural lingerie line.
